Activated carbons and amine-modified materials for carbon dioxide capture –– a review

摘要: Rapidly increasing concentration of CO in the atmosphere has drawn more and more attention in recent years, and adsorption has been considered as an effective technology for CO capture from the anthropogenic sources. In this paper, the attractive adsorbents including activated carbons and amine-modified materials were mainly reviewed and discussed with particular attention on progress in the adsorbent preparation and CO adsorption capacity. Carbon materials can be prepared from different precursors including fossil fuels, biomass and resins using the carbonization-activation or only activation process, and activated carbons prepared by KOH activation with high CO adsorbed amount were reviewed in the preparation, adsorption capacity as well as the relationship between the pore characteristics and CO adsorption. For the amine-modified materials, the physical impregnation and chemical graft of polyethylenimine (PEI) on the different porous materials were introduced in terms of preparation method and adsorption performance as well as their advantages and disadvantages for CO adsorption. In the last section, the issues and prospect of solid adsorbents for CO adsorption were summarized, and it is expected that this review will be helpful for the fundamental studies and industrial applications of activated carbons and amine-modified adsorbents for CO capture.

Reaction and characterization of crosslinking hyperbranched poly (amine-ester) with succine anhydride

摘要: Basing on hydroxyl terminated hyperbranched poly (amine-ester)s (HPAEs), the cross-linking reactions and preparation of ester-crosslinked HPAE films were investigated using succine anhydride (SA) as crosslink reagent. It was proved that the cross-linking reaction between HPAE and SA followed a two-step mechanism. This mechanism provides an efficient route to prepare HPAE/SA cross-linked films, in which, the precursor films were prepared by casting HPAE/SA solution at a lower temperature, and then curing the films at a higher temperature. By varying SA content, the solid HPAE/SA films with different cross-linking degrees were prepared successfully. The highest tensile strength of the cross-linked film could reach 59.60 MPa. With all water contact angle smaller than 74.3°, the crosslinked films demonstrated good hydrophilic properties.

Low-cost adsorbents for urban stormwater pollution control

摘要: Abstract • Various low-cost adsorbents are studied for capturing urban stormwater pollutants. • Adsorbents are selected based on both pollutant adsorption and unexpected leaching. • Application modes of adsorbents influence their utilization efficacy in practice. Stormwater represents a major non-point pollution source at an urban environment. To improve the treatment efficacy of stormwater infrastructure, low-cost adsorbents have increasingly gained attention over the past decades. This article aims to briefly discuss several key aspects and principles for utilization of low-cost adsorbents for urban stormwater treatment. To determine whether a low-cost adsorbent is suitable for stormwater treatment, two aspects should be carefully assessed, including: 1) its adsorption mechanisms and behaviors that can influence the binding stre.g.,h, adsorption kinetics, and treatment capacity; and 2) unwanted chemical leaching patterns that can affect the extent of water quality degradation. Furthermore, the application mode of an adsorbent in the system design influences the utilization efficiency. Adsorbents, after dosed to soil media in infrastructure, would eventually become ineffective after oversaturation. In contrast, standalone filters or innovative composite adsorbents (e.g., adsorbent-coated mulch chips) can enable a long-lasting adsorption due to periodic replacement with fresh adsorbents. The aforementioned principles play a key role in the success of urban stormwater treatment with low-cost adsorbents.

Chitosan/polyethylene glycol impregnated activated carbons: Synthesis, characterization and adsorption

摘要: Novel modified activated carbons (ACs) with enhanced adsorptive properties were obtained coating by chitosan (CS), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and blends of the two polymers (0:1, 1:0, 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1 wt/wt) on ACs by an impregnation technique. The adsorption performances of the pristine, acidified and polymer-impregnated ACs were studied using methylene blue as a model adsorbate. The adsorbents were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and abrasion hardness tests. The average coating thicknesses were between 10 to 23 microns. The pore sizes, pore densities and pore capacities of the activated carbons increased as the wt-% PEG in the coating increased. The highest adsorption capacity (424.7 mg/g) was obtained for the chitosan-coated ACs and this adsorption was well described by the Langmuir isotherm model. The kinetic results were best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The highest rate constant was obtained with the ACs modified with the CS:PEG (2:1) coating and this result was almost 2.6 times greater than that of the unmodified ACs. The CS/PEG impregnated ACs also displayed superior hardness (~90%), compared to unmodified ACs (~85%). Overall the chitosan had a greater effect on improving adsorption capacity whereas the polyethylene glycol enhanced the adsorption rate.

Preparation and characterization of EVAL hollow fiber membrane adsorbents filled with cation exchange

摘要: EVAL hollow fiber membrane adsorbents filled with powder D061-type cation exchange resin were prepared through dry-wet spinning process, using hydrophilic copolymer EVAL as the fiber substrate. The microstructures of the membrane adsorbents were observed, and the pure water fluxes, BSA rejection, and static adsorption capacities of membrane adsorbents for BSA were measured. The effect of the resin-filled content on membrane performance has been discussed. The results showed that EVAL hollow fiber membrane adsorbents filled with D061-type cation exchange resins had good adsorption capacity, and the adsorption capacity increased with the quantity of the resin-filled content. The static protein adsorption capacity was 77.14 mg BSA/g membrane adsorbents when D061 resin loading content was 65% at pH 4.5.

Fabrication of bimetallic Cu–Zn adsorbents with high dispersion by using confined space for gas adsorptive

摘要: The number of active components and their dispersion degree are two key factors affecting the performance of adsorbents. Here, we report a simple but efficient strategy for dispersing active components by using a confined space, which is formed by mesoporous silica walls and templates in the as-prepared SBA-15 (AS). Such a confined space does not exist in the conventional support, calcined SBA-15, which does not contain a template. The Cu and Zn precursors were introduced to the confined space in the AS and were converted to CuO and ZnO during calcination, during which the template was also removed. The results show that up to 5 mmol·g–1 of CuO and ZnO can be well dispersed; however, severe aggregation of both oxides takes place in the sample derived from the calcined SBA-15 with the same loading. Confined space in the AS and the strong interactions caused by the abundant hydroxyl groups are responsible for the dispersion of CuO and ZnO. The bimetallic materials were employed for the adsorptive separation of propene and propane. The samples prepared from the as-prepared SBA-15 showed superior performance to their counterparts from the calcined SBA-15 in terms of both adsorption capacity of propene and selectivity for propene/propane.

Removal of elemental mercury by KI-impregnated clay

摘要: This study described the use of clay impregnated by KI in gas phase elemental mercury (Hg ) removal in flue gas. The effects of KI loading, temperature, O , SO and H O on Hg removal were investigated using a fixed bed reactor. The Hg removal efficiency of KI-clay with 3% KI loading could maintain at a high level (approximately 80 %) after 3 h. The KI-clay demonstrated to be a potential adsorbent for Hg removal when compared with activated carbon based adsorbent. O was found to be an important factor in improving the Hg removal. O was demonstrated to assist the transfer of KI to I on the surface of KI-clay, which could react with Hg directly. NO and SO could slightly improve Hg removal, while H O inhibited it greatly. The results indicated that after adsorption, most of the mercury escaped from the surface again. Some of the mercury may have been oxidized as it left the surface. The results demonstrated that the chemical reaction primarily occurred between KI and mercury on the surface of the KI-clay.

Composite adsorbents of CaCl

摘要: Composite adsorbents of CaCl and sawdust prepared by carbonization for adsorption refrigeration with NH as refrigerant are tested, and the effects of carbonization temperature on the sorption capacity and rate are analyzed. The results show that the amount of pores in the sawdust of the composite adsorbents carbonized, apart from the content of CaCl , is the most dominant factor influencing the NH sorption on composite adsorbents. The optimum carbonization temperature is 700°C, which gives the maximal NH sorption capacity as high as 0.774 kg of NH per kg of the composite, and the specific cooling power is approximately between 338 and 869 W/kg with the cycle duration varying from 5 to 20 minutes. The present study demonstrates that the composite absorbent of CaCl and sawdust prepared by carbonization is more promising and competitive for adsorption refrigeration application.

Synthesis, insecticidal activities and DFT study of pyrimidin-4-amine derivatives containing the 1,2,4

摘要: Twenty six novel pyrimidin-4-amine derivatives containing the 1,2,4-oxadiazole motif were synthesized. Their chemical structures were confirmed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR, and high-resolution mass spectrography. The insecticidal activity results indicated that some of them possessed excellent insecticidal activity (100%) against Mythimna separate, especially for compounds 6d, 6f, 6o, 6w, 6y and 6z. These compounds exhibited no activity against the insects Aphis medicagini and Tetranychus cinnabarinus. The structure- insecticidal activity relationships are discussed. Density functional theory analysis can potentially be used to design more active compounds. These results provide useful insecticide design information for further optimization.

Activated carbon-hybridized and amine-modified polyacrylonitrile nanofibers toward ultrahigh and recyclable

摘要: Nanofibers with high specific surface area and chemical stability have broad prospects in the applications of adsorption. However, the adsorption capacity is limited by the scarcity of adsorption groups and storage space. Herein, the activated carbon-hybridized and amine-modified nanofibers are prepared by integrating activated carbon (AC) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) via electrospinning method and the subsequent amination, which could provide additional storage space and adsorption groups for ultrahigh adsorption capability. Thus, the obtained amine-rich porous PAN nanofibers (APAN/AC) readily realized the ultrahigh adsorption capacity for metal ions and dyes in wastewater. Specifically, the adsorption capacity of APAN/AC nanofibers were 284 mg·g for Cr(VI) and 248 mg·g for methyl orange, which were almost 2 and 4 times than that of amine-modified nanofibers (APAN) and carbon-hybridized nanofibers (PAN/AC), respectively. Moreover, the AC inhibited the chain mobility of polymer matrix and thereby endowing APAN/AC nanofibers with excellent recyclability. The adsorption capability retained 80% after nine adsorption-desorption cycles. The adsorption kinetics and corresponding mechanism were further explored. This strategy combines the advantages of polymer nanofibers and AC, opening a new avenue for developing next-generation absorbent materials.

Synthesis of spherical parallel manipulator for dexterous medical task

This paper deals with the design and the analysis of a spherical parallel manipulator (SPM) for a haptic minimally invasive surgery application. First the medical task was characterized with the help of a surgeon who performed a suture technique called anastomosis. A Vicon system was used to capture the motion of the surgeon, which yielded the volume swept by the tool during the anastomosis operation. The identified workspace can be represented by a cone with a half vertex angle of 26°. A multi objective optimization procedure based on genetic algorithms was then carried out to find the optimal SPM. Two criteria were considered, i.e., task workspace and mechanism dexterity. The optimized SPM was then analyzed to determine the error on the orientation of the end effector as a function of the manufacturing errors of the different links of the mechanism.

Beta-cyclodextrin adsorbents to remove water pollutants—a commentary

摘要: Beta-cyclodextrin-based adsorbent is a promising adsorbent because it has unique characteristics and able to form host-guest complexes with various organic compounds. Adsorption using beta-cyclodextrin-based adsorbent has continuously improved by various preparation strategies and crosslinking agents. This commentary aims to highlight the preparation strategies, properties, and adsorption mechanisms of beta-cyclodextrin-based adsorbents. The adsorbents can be generally classified according to the preparation methods and display high adsorption capacity especially for dyes. Particularly, composite/nanocomposite beta-cyclodextrin-based adsorbents exhibit outstanding adsorption capacity even though the surface area is lower than that of porous and magnetic beta-cyclodextrin-based adsorbents. The beta-cyclodextrin/chitosan functionalized graphene oxide hydrogel with specific surface of 17.6 m2·g–1 yields an extraordinarily maximum adsorption capacity of 1499 mg·g–1 methylene blue, while beta-cyclodextrin/chitosan modified with iron(II, III) oxide nanoparticles displays a much greater maximum adsorption capacity at 2780 mg·g–1. The hydrophobic interaction, functional groups, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction govern the adsorption to a greater capacity. Although this commentary is not exhaustive, the preparation strategies and illustrated mechanisms provide useful insights into the adsorbent–adsorbate interactions, cost-effective analysis, challenges, and future directions of beta-cyclodextrin-based adsorbents in wastewater treatment.

Capture of carbon dioxide over porous solid adsorbents lithium silicate, lithium aluminate and magnesium

摘要: The capturing process for carbon dioxide over porous solid adsorbents such as lithium silicate, lithium aluminate, and magnesium aluminate at pre- combustion temperatures was studied. Lithium silicate was prepared by the sol gel and solid fusion methods. The lithium silicate adsorbent was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and surface area. The capturing of carbon dioxide over lithium silicate, lithium aluminate, and magnesium aluminate was explored at different experimental conditions such as exposure time, temperature variation, and exposure carbon dioxide pressure. The capturing process for carbon dioxide was investigated over these adsorbents with variation of their metal mole ratios. The effect of the addition of (promoter) sodium, potassium, and cesium in the lithium silicate adsorbent was explored to investigate the variation of the capture of carbon dioxide over these adsorbents.

Removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by activated carbon impregnated with humic acid

摘要: Humic acid (HA) was impregnated onto powdered activated carbon to improve its Cu(II) adsorption capability. The optimum pH value for Cu(II) removal was 6. The maximum adsorption capacity of HA-impregnated activated carbon was up to 5.98 mg·g , which is five times the capacity of virgin activated carbon. The adsorption processes were rapid and accompanied by changes in pH. In using a linear method, it was determined that the equilibrium experimental data were better represented by the Langmuir isotherm than by the Freundlich isotherm. Surface charges and surface functional groups were studied through zeta potential and FTIR measurements to explain the mechanism behind the humic-acid modification that enhanced the Cu(II) adsorption capacity of activated carbon.
